They tried to perform last rites on the ludicrous claim about President Obama’s death panels, telling Sarah Palin, in effect, you’ve got to quit making things up.
But it didn’t matter. The story refused to die.

Arlen Specter is no stranger to the world of comedy. In fact, next to politics, it may be the field that earns him the most headlines. That’s why it was no surprise when Senator Specter took the stage at the Pittsburgh Improv on Thursday night to benefit Allegheny county’s Music Festival Fund for children.

It has just gotten awful for the Republicans. Tear-shedding gut-wrenching heart-breaking sad. The party of tough talk and unflappable belief in their version of America — the party willing to send others’ kids to war to prove how tough they are — has just become the most whiny, bitchy, sad little thing you’ve ever seen. Like one of those poodles with a red ribbon and a pedi-pedi and an owner who you just want to hand a sandwich to and beg her to eat, please eat.

For the last Idon’tknowhowlong, Republicans and Democrats have been locked in partisan warfare that has gone on for longer than the 100 Years War, the Arab-Israeli conflict, or what it feels like to sit through one episode of “The Real Housewives of NYC.” The Republicans like to refer to themselves as “traditional.” That means, they are anti-progress. The Democrats like to refer to themselves as “progressives.” That means, not liberals. Republicans want to fight about social issues, such as gay rights.

On Tuesday I wrote : I’ve now heard from multiple sources that the AFL-CIO and other labor unions have promised to stand firmly with Pennsylvania Sen. Arlen Specter if he becomes a rare crossover Republican vote on EFCA when that issue hits the floor of the Senate. This is a life-and-death issue to unions, many of which are dwindling in membership, and they’re willing to give cover to one of the most endangered Republicans if it helps passage. Today, Greg Sargent got more confirmation of labor’s plans to shield Specter next year if he sticks with them in the EFCA battle.
