The year began on an uplifting note with Barack Obama sworn in as the 44th U.S. President and the first African-American elected to the nation’s highest office. It was all down hill from there, however. 2009 quickly became known as the year of the Great Recession; with jobs shed at an alarming rate (unemployment the highest its been in 26 years), fears of banks on the brink of insolvency, foreclosures at an all-time high, reduced credit availability for consumers, shrinking investor confidence, and a marked decline in business and consumer spending.
Kirk Slammed From Right And Left For Courting Sarah Palin

When word broke that self-described moderate Republican Mark Kirk was angling for kind words from Sarah Palin for his U.S. Senate bid, the response from his rivals was savage and uniform. All three leading Democrats, as well as Kirk’s Republican challenger, accused him of inconsistency, a criticism that has nagged Kirk ever since he backed away from his vote in favor of climate change legislation in June. Kirk said he voted for the Democratic climate change bill because the constituents of his North Shore Congressional District wanted him to.

As the inimitable Sarah Palin gets ready for the unleashing of her memoirs, Going Rogue , she announced on her Facebook page today that she’s “very, very excited about the upcoming road trip for my book.” Of course she is. It will get her out of Alaska and all of the reminders of her failed governorship. Hopefully, she’ll get more than a few reminders of her failed support of right-wing congressional candidate Doug “I Don’t Live in the District” Hoffman, whose defeat yesterday can be directly linked to Palin’s support.
